Dance leotards: how to choose the right color

Colors, lines, and auditions: what lies behind the leotard choice

A dance leotard is not just clothing; it is a true working tool that helps highlight lines, proportions, and the cleanliness of movements. While color choice is often linked to personal taste or teacher preferences, there are common customs based on age, discipline, and context.
In ballet, for example, young girls typically wear light colors like white, pink, and light blue, while older students prefer darker shades like burgundy, gray, blue, and especially black—which is also the dominant color for modern dance classes.
When a uniform is not mandatory, such as during workshops, trends tend to follow the seasons: darker tones in winter and more vibrant ones in summer. Auditions require a separate discussion: on these occasions, light colors are highly recommended. The reason is purely technical, as light shades allow the jury to clearly "read" the body lines, highlighting both strengths and any technical flaws.

Skin undertone: the shortcut to finding your color

As with makeup, the choice of bodysuit color should be based on your skin undertone, following the principle of affinity to avoid dulling your complexion. Selecting the correct shade helps to brighten the face, shoulders, and arms, bringing greater harmony to the entire figure.

Here are the guidelines for the two main undertones:

  • Warm undertone (golden/amber): is enhanced by complementary colors such as cream, powder pink, dove grey, coral, turquoise, green (emerald and forest), orchid purple, rust, coffee, and teal. Black and overly cool shades (sky blue, charcoal grey, electric blue, fuchsia) should be avoided.

  • Cool undertone (milky/rosy/olive): perfectly suits tones like white, grey (light and charcoal), powder pink, sky blue, mint, raspberry, fuchsia, indigo, blue (electric and navy), black, and burgundy.

The black bodysuit: aesthetics, functionality, and the market

Black remains a true "evergreen" in the dance world, not only for its timeless charm but for specific technical and practical reasons. First, it is loved for its ability to slim and visually unify the figure, ensuring a clean and harmonious line.
Beyond aesthetics, it holds strong commercial value: market analysis indicates it as the dominant and best-selling color across many clothing categories. Choosing a black leotard means investing in an extremely versatile piece that is easily reused throughout the year. Ultimately, whether you prefer light or dark tones, the "magical" slimming effect of black remains a certainty, consolidating its reign in every dancer's wardrobe.
